Collectives

How important are collectives for the FAU Berlin?

No right in wrong?

For some people work in a collective is a political concept or at least expresses a will to work without a boss. For others it happens by chance or is a result of necessity. In any case, collectives do not operate outside of capitalism. They are also subject to market forces, and working conditions that prevail there have both a positive and negative effects on their respective sector.

Part of a wider movement

The FAU is trying to find an approach that satisfies the needs of the worker in collectives and integrates them into a broader movement. At best, collectives are places for social experimentation and simultaneously strengthened each other as part of an "economic federation". They can lead to the improvement of living and working conditions of individuals and serve as a testing ground for the future reorganization of the economy and society.

Avoiding isolation

However, when they remain isolated they are subject to pressure from market forces that are outside of their sphere of influence. This is expressed as the tendency towards self-exploitation and the return to "normal" workplace structures. This is neither in the interest of the workers inside or outside of a collective. We therefore welcome workers in collectives or indeed entire collectives to join the FAU.
