Poor working conditions and low wages are the norm, especially in the warehousing and logistics sector. High pressure to perform, harassment, and legal tricks on the part of employers create exploitative working conditions. At the same time, politicians are intensifying their attacks on existing achievements such as working time laws, protection against dismissal, and the right to part-time work. This class struggle from above, in times of increasing authoritarian and proto-fascist tendencies, creates a threatening backdrop that initially appears overwhelming. But we can fight back—there are enough examples of successful labor struggles in recent times.
These labor struggles and strategies of resistance are the subject of this presentation with Nina Scholz. What can we learn specifically from past actions? Which strategies should we adopt, which mistakes should we avoid? And what role can trade unions play as a counterweight to authoritarian tendencies – both for individual employees, who are empowered through organizing and experiences of solidarity, and in the context of society as a whole?
Nina Scholz is a freelance journalist. She primarily researches in the areas of tech, trade unions, and labor. In 2022, her book Die wunden Punkte von Google, Amazon, Deutsche Wohnen & Co. (The sore points of Google, Amazon, Deutsche Wohnen & Co.) was published by Bertz + Fischer Verlag.
