Update Swedish School: “…get rid of us because we are unionised”

Published on Jul 21, 2014 Tags: , ,
Today’s press release from the FAU Berlin stated that the situation for the school’s staff is still uncertain. According to the latest information received from staff members, there have now been some changes. While neither of the two FAU members (one nature science and sports teacher and one staff member at the after-school activity centre) have yet received any offers, several teachers have apparently been informed by phone of possible opportunities for rehiring; in one case, at significantly worsened work-time conditions. The situation remains uncertain.
Additionally, management announced in June that there were no plans to hire external personnel. But a few selected teachers cannot take on all the relevant duties on their own. In particular, in the case of the FAU member previously employed as a nature science and sports teacher at the school, there is no other teacher qualified to take on these duties. This would mean that either external teaching applicants would have to be recruited after all, or that certain school subjects would have to be cancelled.

The FAU Berlin still suspects that the mass dismissals were used as a means to get rid of troublesome workers. “They obviously want to get rid of us because we are unionised. They would rather put up with protests and go to court than hire us again”, said Johnny Hellquist, who has been working as a teacher at the school for four years.
If this suspicion proves correct, the dismissal of union members would be even more scandalous. It is unclear what, apart from creating uncertainty, the school’s CEO and rector of the Swedish Church in Berlin hopes to achieve by her actions. Rehiring all staff members would be the best and most responsible solution.
