Solidarity to our colleagues at Uber and Lyft - no to "Prop22"!

Published on Nov 02, 2020 Tags: , ,
On the 3rd of novembernot not only the new U.S.-president will be elected - people will also vote on the "Proposal22" law enlargement - which could cause severe regression for Gig-workers` rights.

There is reason to rejoice: An appeals court in California - the birthplace of platform work - ruled last week that Uber drivers are to be considered employees and not - as before - (fake) self-employed entrepreneurs.

Instead of precarious subcontractor work, our colleagues will soon have a minimum wage, paid vacation and sick days as well as the prospect of health insurance. As the workers group of the Lieferando-Rider at FAU Berlin we welcome this success! The negotiation of the technical keypoints in the Gig-Economy is almost as young as the model itself - every development in favor of the workers is therefore especially important - and hopefully groundbreaking.

But there is also reason for indignation: after the verdict, the management of Uber and Lyft promptly threatened to discontinue their services or make immense price jumps. But then they preferred to attack the jurisdiction directly: To this end, the legislative extension "Proposal 22" (Prop22 for short) was launched. "Prop22" would continue to bind the workers in the gig economy to their role as (fake) self-employed. It is the next round in the tug-of-war about the relationship between commitment, rights and duties - especially of employers.

Prop22 will be decided by the population on November 3rd - at the same time as the presidential election - by ballot. No matter what the result will be - we will continue to fight in solidarity with our colleagues!
