Sfizy Freeze: Workers on Fire at a Picket outside Sfizy Veg Pizzeria

Published on Jan 10, 2016 Tags: , ,
Update: Saturday, Jan. 2, 30+ FAU Berlin members and supporters gathered to protest the Sfizy Vegan Pizzeria on Treptower Str. 95. Despite sub zero temperatures, the protest was well attended, energetic and made itself heard powerfully. Besides FAU Berlin, other organisations were there to show their solidarity, including Dr. Pogo and the Berlin Migrant Strikers.

The dispute is between two FAU members and ex-Sfizy employees who were both unfairly fired on the spot in November by a boss who step by step is becoming notorious as a shameless exploiter of workers and left-wing principles to make some quick cash. (For more specific info. on this case, see here) The restaurant was consciously decorated using revolutionary reds, anti-fascist, anti-capitalist and anarcho-syndicalist memorabilia. Thus, one favourite chant of the protestors on this night—aimed ironically at the contradictoriness behind Sfizy's brand of veganismwas: 'Save the animals, fuck the workers!'

The FAU is demanding that Sfizy change the official reason for the members' dismissals (Kündigung) from an extraordinary dismissalwhich carries penalties on benefits (Sperrzeit)to a normal dismissal so that the two workers do not have to struggle getting future jobs, and because both of the workers, in fact, were fired unfairly. While neither members wish to get their jobs back, FAU is additionally demanding on their behalf an official apology for their mistreatment and the wages for the month of December which both workers are legally entitled to according to the time they were officially—later, by letter and thus (due to the company’s small size) legally—fired.

Since this struggle began, though, and since going public over the holidays, it has become quite apparent that the demand at the heart of many people's solidarity with this particular struggle is that bosses like Sfizy's—Berlin has many—put an end to their cynical use of leftist principles in order to perpetuate the same senselessly brutal capitalism which these principles are fundamentally against. As ex-Sfizy worker put it: 'As workers it's necessary to start to stop the exploitative conditions in Berlin's gastronomy industry and unmask the “left wing” places that don't respect the rights of the workers.'

Since the picket, a number of people—some ex-Sfizy workers themselveshave come forward to the FAU offering their help and support. With no word from the bosses or their lawyers since the picket, FAU Berlin plans to continue the fight through legal means as well as through further union actions like Saturday's.

An injury to one is an injury to all!
