Everyday stories from a grassroots union

Earlier this year two gastronomy workers came in contact with the union. They had been working at a restaurant and trying for the last two years to receive the holiday money that the boss was refusing to pay, making excuses such as "we are friends", “the business is having difficult times”, “we need your help” and so on, and secure their salaries.

They had no experience in standing up for their rights as workers and in the beginning they were not sure whether to take the step of confronting the boss. After a couple of meetings one of them made up his mind to fight for his rights, he became a member of the union and as a group we set up a strategy for our demands. He first informed the boss that he was now part of the FAU and he wanted his money. Although this caught the boss by surprise, he showed no willingness to pay.

The next step was to have another member of the union go to the restaurant and inform the boss that, according to the applicable laws, he was obliged to pay the worker, otherwise legal actions would be taken to secure his rights. It was only then that the boss understood the importance of Elligio's demands and that he would no longer be able to get away with it and postpone the payment without suffering legal consequences.

An official letter from the union was also delivered by the Secretary of Trade Union Action, with the demands of the worker and a deadline for the payment. Things went well after all he was paid and is proving his solidarity to other workers since then.
